Bonfire Night is on the 5th of November, but fireworks often go off for days either side, and again around New Year's Eve. The sudden bangs and flashes can be really unsettling for dogs, and a bit of preparation makes a big difference.
Here are five things to do before the fireworks start.
1. Walk before dusk
Fireworks usually start once it's dark. Walk your dog in daylight and let them go to the toilet before it gets noisy, so you're not out in the garden or on the street when something goes off.
What to do: Keep them on the lead, even in places they're normally reliable off it. A startled dog can bolt.
2. Set up a safe space
Many dogs want to hide when they're scared, so let them. A covered crate, a quiet room or a cosy corner with their bed and a blanket gives them somewhere to feel secure.
What to do: Set it up a few days early so it's familiar, and don't coax them out if they're settled.

3. Mask the noise
Close curtains and windows, and put the TV, radio or some music on at a normal volume to soften the bangs and block out flashes.
What to do: Keep it low-key. You're aiming for a calm, ordinary evening.
4. Stay calm and stay close
Dogs pick up on how we feel, so if you're relaxed, it helps them settle.
What to do: Don't make a big fuss either. Stay nearby, and avoid leaving them home alone if you can.

5. Check their ID and microchip details
Frightened dogs can slip out through open doors and gates.
What to do: Make sure their collar tag is legible and their microchip details are up to date.
Helping them feel settled
Alongside a calm routine, a little extra support can help during busy firework weeks. These come in different formats, so pick what suits your dog.
- Calming Supplement Chews (dogs, £34.99): duck-flavoured daily chews with hemp seeds, chamomile, passionflower and valerian root, made to support calm and relaxation. Best used daily over a few weeks, so start early.
- Calming Powder (dogs, 80g, £17.99): a natural blend of amino acids, lemon balm and passionflower that you sprinkle onto their food. No fuss at mealtimes.
- Organic Hemp Oil (dogs and cats, £11.99): 100% cold-pressed hemp oil, designed to keep anxious pets calm in stressful situations. Given by dropper, straight into the mouth or on their food.
A calm, cosy wind-down
After a busy walk or a noisy evening, a relaxed bath-time routine can help them unwind. The Lavender & Chamomile Scent Bundle includes shampoo, conditioner, no-rinse paw cleaner, deodorising spray and foam comb, all with a relaxing lavender and chamomile scent.
