Allergy Essentials

Allergy season can be challenging for both pets and their owners. Watching our fur babies suffer from allergies is tough, and we want to do everything possible to ease their discomfort. However, figuring out how to help them can be tricky and overwhelming. Thankfully, we’ve put together a list of allergy essentials to help manage your pet's symptoms, making it easier to keep them comfortable during allergy season.

Managing Allergy Symptoms

Taking proactive steps to manage your pet's allergy symptoms is crucial. Ensuring their comfort not only helps them feel better but also prevents the potential for costly vet visits and more serious health issues down the line. Allergies can escalate into ear infections, hot spots, and even open wounds from excessive scratching, if left untreated. That’s why it’s vital to address and alleviate symptoms as soon as they appear.

Itchy Skin

Itchy skin is one of the main symptoms of allergies. If you notice your pet scratching more than usual, it’s likely that they are experiencing an allergic reaction. Luckily, there are ways to help your pet and alleviate some of their itching.

Salmon Oil is a great food supplement to use when it comes to seasonal allergies. Salmon Oil aids to create a barrier between the skin and the outside so that allergens like pollen aren’t directly touching the skin. It also helps to keep the skin and coat hydrated and in good condition which can help reducing itching caused by dry skin. If this wasn’t enough, Salmon Oil also aids the joints, the immune system, and the brain function of your pet.

For a topical solution, we’d recommend using our Antiseptic Itchy Skin Spray. This spray combats fungus, yeast, and bacteria on your pet's skin and coat, all of which are common culprits behind itching. Besides soothing the itch, the spray also cleans and protects wounds from bacteria which can cause further scratching and inevitably worsen the condition.  The Itchy Skin Spray will help to keep bacteria at bay which will help to reduce itchiness, sores are kept clean, and allergies are managed.

Although the Itchy Skin Spray is a great topical solution to use to help reduce itching, it’s always best to try and prevent the itching in the first place. Washing your dog regularly can help to rid allergens from the coat and rehydrate the skin and coat to reduce itchiness from things like dry skin and pollen. We’d recommend our Oatmeal Shampoo or our Medi-Fresh Shampoo.

Our Oatmeal Shampoo is perfect for dogs with sensitive skin and can be used on puppies over 8 weeks old. It contains colloidal oatmeal and aloe vera - both of which help to soothe itchy, dry and irritated skin. The shampoo effectively removes dirt, grease and allergens from the skin and coat, leaving the fur feeling silky soft and smelling great. We’d recommend using the oatmeal shampoo once a week to help alleviate pollen-related allergy symptoms.

Our Medi-Fresh Shampoo contains cooling tea tree, aloe vera, colloidal oatmeal and 9 other essential oils that aid to soothe and relax tired and cracked skin. It’s naturally medicated and has antibacterial and antifungal properties which can help to clean minor wounds, grazes and calm poorly skin. We’d recommend using this shampoo if your dog is struggling with their skin due to itching caused by allergies.

Runny Eyes and Itchy Ears

Runny eyes and itchy ears are a common symptom of allergies in pets. Understanding these signs and taking early action can significantly improve your dog’s comfort and overall health after exposure to allergens. Excessive tearing and watery discharge can cause staining on the fur, this can look unsightly and potentially cause a build-up that may lead to infection and discomfort. It’s important to tackle these stains when you notice them. To do this, we’d recommend using our Eye Wipes. These are gentle, yet effective in cleaning tear stains and preventing residue build-up.

Similarly, scratching at the ears, shaking the head, redness, inflammation, foul odour, or discharge from the ears can all be signs of an allergic reaction. These reactions are usually due to food or pollen and if left untreated can lead to ear infections requiring vet visits. The best way to deal with this is to keep on top of regular ear cleaning. Our Ear Wipes are gentle and cleanse the ears thoroughly, removing dirt, wax, and residue build-up from inside the ear. This will help to prevent bacteria growing inside the ear, causing nasty odours and infections.

Hiding Medication

Pets are sometimes prescribed medication to manage their allergies, but getting dogs to take their meds can be a challenge. We’re talking from experience, when we say it can often be a two-man job! That’s why we would recommend using the Coconut Oil or Peanut Butter to hide medication. These products are fantastic at disguising medication as a tasty treat and the Coconut Oil can be used to improve the skin and coat health. It is also beneficial in detangling knots and moisturising the nose and paws when used topically. A definite one to add to your allergy essentials!
